2. Country: Use this box to find entities in a particular country (e.g., China).
3. Program: Use this box to find a category of entities: e.g., nuclear, missile, military, chemical, biological, export enforcement, or U.S. restricted. Click the "Browse" button to see the list of categories.
4. Product: Use this box to find entitiess that develop or manufacture specific commodities or conduct specific activities. For example, to find entities that develop "rocket propellant," type this term into this box. To learn more about a particular product controlled for export, use the "Commodity" search box.
Full-Text Search: Searches the main database, including entity information and profiles of proliferant countries, data on missile ranges and warhead production, technology descriptions, and other reference materials.
1. Search Words: Use this box to search text across the main database. International regimes, U.S. Export Administration Regulations and U.S. restricted parties lists are not searched from this box.
2. Record Titles: Use this box to search the titles of records contained in the Risk Report.
Controlled Product Search: Searches technology descriptions to determine whether and why a product is controlled for export.
1. Commodity: Use this box to find descriptions of products controlled for export (e.g., lasers), as well as information about suppliers and/or manufacturers of such products.
Regimes and Regulations Search: Searches the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), the International Traffic on Arms Regulations (ITAR), other U.S. export regulations, and international regimes to determine whether an entity or product is restruicted for export purposes.
1. U.S. Restricted Parties: You can use this box to find persons and companies on the U.S. Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list and the U.S. Denied Persons List (DPL). U.S. entities are restricted in doing business with persons or companies whose names appear in these records.
2. International Regimes: This box is used to search the texts of export control regimes to determine which products are controlled for export. The regimes currently included are: the Australia Group (AG, controlling chemical and biological weapon technology), the Chemical Weapon Convention (CWC, controlling the export of toxic chemicals), the European Union Dual-use Export Control Lists, the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR, controlling missile technology), the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG, controlling nuclear technology), and the Wassenaar Control List of Munitions (controlling conventional arms and dual-use goods). For example, type "zirconium" in this box to find how zirconium is controlled for export under the various control regimes.
Search the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR)
1. Full-Text: Use this box to search for any word in the entire U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), including supplements and Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) records.
2. ECCN: Use this box to find the text of any Export Control Classification Number (e.g., 1b201).
3. Country: Use this box in conjunction with the ECCN box to determine whether a commodity is controlled for export to a specific destination. For example, enter "2B004" in the ECCN box and "Brazil" in the Country box at the same time. If a record is found, this means that commodities controlled under 2B004 of the EAR are controlled to Brazil. If you entered "Canada," no records would have been found, indicating that these commodities are not controlled for export to Canada.
4. Section: Use this box to read a specific section (e.g., 744) of the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
It's easy to find the information you want!
1. Type query criteria in one or more boxes or click the Browse
Word Wheel button.
If you type criteria in more than one box, documents must
meet all specified criteria.
Example: Find documents that contain the word
"marketing" AND have a file date of 06-13-97.
2. Click Submit Query.
3. Records that meet your criteria are displayed as a report. You can reformat the report, jump to documents, and browse.
4. To go back to the search screen, use the browser's Back button or select a URL from the browser's Address list.
Type the word you want to find (computer) or type a phrase (blue harvest moon) to find those words, in that order. To find variations based on word stems, type an asterisk at the end of one or more words (comput* tech*). Use the symbols & / ! between words or phrases to represent Boolean AND, OR, NOT. Include a space before and after the symbol. Use w# (within) and p# (preceding) to find words near each other. See examples below.
| Type this… | To find… |
| sales meeting | those words, in that order |
| sales / marketing | either word (or both) |
| sales & marketing | only documents that contain both words (documents that contain just one of the words will be ignored) |
| health policy ! medical benefit* | “health policy” but not “medical benefits” |
| sales p5 market* | “sales” preceding “marketing” by 5 words or fewer. You can include an asterisk at the end of either word. Do not string together phrases (clinton w5 white house). |
| sales w5 marketing | “sales” within 5 words of “marketing” (before or after). Do not include phrases. |
NOTE: Words joined by & / ! are evaluated in left-to-right order: red & white / blue finds items that are red and white, or items that are blue. Use parentheses to control evaluation order: red & (white / blue) finds items that are red and white or red and blue.
If a search box has a Browse Word Wheel button, click it to select words from a list. This opens a dialog that shows words you can search for. For example, if you click the Browse button next to a box labeled "Country", you see a list of countries. By pasting an item such as "China" into a box, you can search for it. This eliminates trial-and-error searching and produces more accurate results. For more information, click the Help button in the Word Wheel dialog.
The Word Wheel is a Java applet. To use it, you need a browser that supports Java and JavaScript, such as version 3.0 or later of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
If a search screen includes an AND-OR-NOT droplist in front of each box, you can do more sophisticated searches. The Boolean operator selected for a box determines how the search criteria in that box will be combined with criteria already evaluated. Boxes are evaluated from top to bottom (first box to last).
A term is a complete item, with no additional text before or after. To search for a term, precede it with an equal sign (=). For example, =john smith finds only that complete term (does not find just "john” or just "smith" or that phrase embedded in other text).
Case is always ignored (a search for joe smith finds Joe Smith). Punctuation is also ignored, except for the and-or-not symbols (& / !) and the colon for range searches ( : ). If you want these characters to be interpreted literally, use quotation marks ("Smith & Wesson") or replace the punctuation with a space (Smith Wesson).
To clear query criteria from the form, click the Reset button at the bottom of the page.
To start your search, click the Submit Query button at the bottom of the page.
A successful search finds one or more records, which are displayed in your Web browser as a report. Use the browser controls as you normally would to view and print HTML pages. Use the procedures described below to perform special operations.
